2019年度A1A2タームに、KHAREL Dipesh先生による”Visual Ethnography: Filmmaking for Fieldwork”が開講します。この授業では、動画を用いて人々の営みを学術的に調査し理解する方法を考えていきます。

ビジュアル・エスノグラフィーとは、映像などの視覚資料を用いた社会調査をいいます。こうした手法は、人類学や社会学の領域で1960年代ごろから活発化したと言われています。例えばこの時期、UCLA(University of California, Los Angeles)では、Ethnographic Film Training Programという研究プロジェクトが立ち上がりました。技術革新も、こうした活発化の要因の一つでした。1960年代以降、映像撮影と同時に音を録音することが可能になり、1970年代以降はカメラの軽量化も進んでいきました。

現在では、社会調査のなかでのビジュアル・メソッドに関する教科書も多く刊行されています。すでに存在する視覚資料を用いた内容分析や解釈ではなく、社会調査そのものにビジュアル・メソッドを導入し、視覚資料を新たに生み出し、その上でその資料を研究しようと考える野心的な人は、ぜひ受講してみてはいかがでしょうか。

The visual ethnography course is designed for students who wish to undertake practice-based research, using a video camera as a research tool. The course provides you knowledge of studying and presenting academic research about human society using a combination of scientific methods and artistic cinematography. During the course, you will learn a broad range of filmic techniques offering solutions to practical problems such as how to closely examine human activity and how to extend an understanding of the subject in the editing suite. Specifically, this course is very useful and exciting for students who are interested in documentary filmmaking and filmmaking for fieldwork. I am really looking forward to meeting you all.
